Synopsis

Coastal regions are among the most vulnerable ecosystems in the world, facing increasing pressures from climate change, environmental degradation, and unsustainable development practices. In South Asia, where millions of people depend on coastal ecosystems for livelihoods, food security, and economic activities, climate-induced risks such as sea-level rise, coastal erosion, cyclones, flooding, salinity intrusion, and ecosystem degradation have become critical challenges. This book explores the complex interactions between climate change, coastal environments, human vulnerability, and sustainability pathways across South Asia.

The book provides an interdisciplinary understanding of coastal climate risks by integrating perspectives from environmental science, climate policy, ecosystem management, governance, spatial analysis, and sustainable development. It examines approaches for assessing coastal vulnerability, measuring ecosystem resilience, and developing effective adaptation strategies. Particular attention is given to nature-based solutions, ecosystem restoration, climate-resilient planning, community adaptation, environmental governance, and innovative technologies for coastal management.

Drawing upon diverse case studies from South Asian coastal regions, the book highlights both challenges and opportunities in building resilient coastal futures. It discusses policy frameworks, institutional mechanisms, climate finance, and regional cooperation required to address growing climate pressures. By connecting scientific knowledge with practical policy solutions, this volume contributes to the understanding of sustainable coastal management in a rapidly changing climate and provides insights for researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and development professionals working toward climate-resilient societies.
